Dr Marilena Giannoudi discusses training and a career in Medical Microbiology with Dr Christopher Rooney, a Specialist Registrar in Medical Microbiology in Leeds undertaking a PhD in the gut microbiome as out of programme research.

Medical Microbiology bridges the laboratory and clinical teams and provides a varied career, including oversight of laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship.


At the time of recording, Dr Christopher Rooney was a specialist registrar in medical microbiology (ST4) at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, having previously held an ACF in medical microbiology. Dr Rooney is on OOPR completing a PhD in the gut microbiome. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Rooney was a clinical fellow with the infection prevention and control team at NHS E&I.
